The Journey of the Major Arcana: From the Fool to the World

Among the 78 tarot cards, the 22 Major Arcana are not a mere bundle of cards but hold one great story running from card 0, the Fool, to card 21, the World. This is often called "the Fool's Journey," symbolizing how one pure soul comes into the world, grows through all manner of experiences, and at last arrives at its whole self. It is, in effect, all our lives compressed into a single myth.

The journey begins with card 0, the Fool. Stepping off even at a cliff's edge with eyes on the sky, the Fool symbolizes innocence, boundless possibility, and a fearless beginning. Then card 1, the Magician, shows will and the power to act; card 2, the High Priestess, inner intuition. The Empress (3) and the Emperor (4) bring abundance and order, the Hierophant (5) tradition and learning, as the soul gradually learns the rules of the world.

In the middle, the journey meets trial and turning. Past the drive of the Chariot (7) and the gentle courage of Strength (8), the Hermit (9) brings a time of exploring the inner self alone, and the Wheel of Fortune (10) tells of life's ever-turning flow. In particular, Death (13) symbolizes not an end but transformation—sending off the old and becoming new—and the Tower (16) the awakening that comes after a sudden collapse. These cards can feel frightening, yet they are in truth the very knots growth requires.

Then the journey moves toward the light. The Star (17) brings hope and healing after trial, the Moon (18) a night of facing the unconscious and fear, the Sun (19) bright joy and vitality. At Judgement (20) one looks back over the past life and is reborn, and at last, reaching the World (21), one round of the journey is complete—and its end leads into another Fool's first step.

So when a Major Arcana appears in a tarot reading, it is read as a sign pointing less to small daily matters than to the great themes and turning points of life, and to where on the road the soul now stands. FortuneLeaf's tarot content rests on this story of the journey. When you quietly consider where on the Fool's Journey the card you drew shines, the card becomes not a fixed fate but a warm mirror for understanding the you of now.

The twenty-two Major Arcana are often read as a single story called "the Fool's journey." It begins as card 0, the Fool, shoulders a small bundle and takes the first step into the world. Early in the journey, the cards from the Magician to the Chariot show the tools and roles we take up as we live—will and intuition, love and authority, and the drive to press forward. In the middle, the cards from Strength to Temperance depict trials and inner maturing: governing desire, pausing alone to contemplate, learning humility before the Wheel of Fortune, and, like the Hanged Man, turning one's perspective upside down. And later, passing through the upheaval of the Devil and the Tower, into the light of the Star, the Moon, and the Sun, one finally reaches the completion of the World. So whichever card you draw, it is one scene of this long journey, a signpost that reflects roughly where on that road you now stand.
