The Fool’s Journey: A Story of Growth Told Through the Major Arcana

Among tarot’s 78 cards, the 22 richest in symbol are called the “Major Arcana.” Yet when you link these 22 in order, from card 0, “The Fool,” to card 21, “The World,” they become, remarkably, a single story of one person going out into the world and growing into maturity. This is often called “the Fool’s Journey.”

The story begins with the pure Fool (0), setting out on the road with nothing but excitement, knowing nothing. He learns his own powers (the Magician, the High Priestess), meets parental figures (the Emperor, the Empress), and learns the rules and the love of the world (the Hierophant, the Lovers). Then he sets his own direction and drives forward (the Chariot), and passes through inner strength and solitude (Strength, the Hermit). He meets the great turning wheel of fate (the Wheel of Fortune), and moves through justice, trial, and the time of letting go (Justice, the Hanged Man).

The latter half of the journey is deeper still. Death, symbol of endings and change; Temperance, learning balance; the Devil and the Tower, facing fear — these dark cards are not prophecies of misfortune but rites of passage that set down the old and make one new. Passing through that trial, the hope and recovery of the Star, the Moon, and the Sun arrive; through the awakening of Judgement; and at last one reaches the wholeness where all is woven into one — the World (21). And that end leads once more into the beginning of a new Fool.

The comfort the Fool’s Journey offers us is clear. Wherever you are now — at the thrilling start, in the midst of trial, or on the road of recovery — it is not a failure but one scene of the story. Even before a dark card, if you remember “this too is one step of growth,” tarot becomes not a tool of fright but a map of your life. As FortuneLeaf always does, what the Fool’s Journey offers is not the sentence of a fixed fate, but a soft reflection that lets you look tenderly at your present self within a larger story — for we are all, each at our own pace, one Fool walking toward the World.
