How to Find Your Name Number — A Beginner’s Guide to the Numerology Expression Number

When people first meet numerology, they usually start with the “life path” drawn from a birth date. Separate from that, though, there is a “name number” drawn from the letters of your name. It is often called the expression or destiny number, and it is said to reflect your outward talents and impression more than your inborn temperament. Because the calculation begins by turning letters into numbers, one usually uses the name written in the Roman alphabet.

The underlying table is simple. The letters A through I are given 1 to 9, then J through R are given 1 to 9 again, and S through Z 1 to 9 once more. So A, J and S are 1; B, K and T are 2; C, L and U are 3, and so on, until every letter holds a single number from 1 to 9. This “Pythagorean” arrangement is the most widely used method today.

Now the reducing. Turn every letter of the name into its number and add them, then keep adding the digits of that sum until you reach a single digit. For example, if a sum comes to 39, then 3 + 9 = 12, and again 1 + 2 = 3, so the name number is 3. There is, however, a tradition that if 11 or 22 appears along the way, you leave it as a “master number” rather than reducing further, because such numbers are seen as carrying a special resonance.

There is something important to remember here. Even for the same person, the number changes depending on which name you use. The formal name on a passport, the nickname you go by, whether you include or drop a middle name — each shifts the sum. So a name number is not an unchangeable brand of fate but more a game of noticing what hue the name you offer the world takes on. It also means there is no single fixed answer.

So if you have worked out your name number, savour lightly the quality that number is said to carry — just do not pin it down as the whole of who you are. As always in FortuneLeaf, numerology does not announce a fixed fate. A small number blossoming from a single line of your name is only a fond mirror, letting you look once more at how you call yourself and how you wish to be seen.
