The 22 Major Arcana are not merely scattered, separate images. Many people join these twenty-two from first to last and read them as one story — the “Fool’s Journey.” It begins where card 0, the Fool, shoulders a single bundle and takes a first step into the world, and runs all the way to card 21, the World, where wholeness is reached: it pictures the path along which one soul grows up.
At the journey’s start, the innocent Fool first meets figures of “will and nurture” — the Magician who sets intention, the quiet wisdom of the High Priestess, the abundantly embracing Empress, the order-building Emperor. Through them the Fool learns, in turn, will and intuition, love and structure. It is still the stage of learning the world’s outward forms — the first lessons, you might say, of growing up.
Then the journey enters a deeper stretch of trial. Like the Hanged Man, it pauses and turns its gaze upside down; like the Death card, it sees off a season and is reborn; like the Tower, it wakes, amid collapse, to a false foundation. These cards are often thought frightening, yet within the journey they are necessary passages of “shedding the old self and becoming new.” Only by passing through the dark can one move on to the next light.
And the journey turns toward recovery and integration. Through the hope and healing of the Star, the bright joy of the Sun, and the call of Judgement, it comes at last to the World, where one full turn closes whole — the place where scattered pieces gather into one. Yet this ending is not a true end: the Fool returns to 0 and begins a new journey, just as we finish one chapter and stand as the novice of another.
So the Fool’s Journey is less a table of prophecy saying “this card is fixed thus” and more a map of growth that everyone passes through again and again. When you meet a single card, asking “where on this journey am I now?” lets that card tell a far gentler story. As always in FortuneLeaf, tarot does not announce a fixed fate — the journey of twenty-two cards is only a mirror, reflecting where you stand now to help you take the next step.
