The two-liter bottle on my desk
For a few weeks I kept one of those motivational water bottles on my desk, the two-liter kind with times printed down the side. First mark by 10 a.m., second by noon, and so on. The first two days felt virtuous. By day three I was in the bathroom every hour. When I fell behind the afternoon marks, I would catch up in the evening and then wake at 2 a.m. After about two weeks the bottle went into a drawer.
The question that stuck with me was simple: where did two liters come from, and was it the right number for me? The answer turned out to be less tidy than the bottle implied, and also more reassuring.
Where "eight glasses" came from
The most commonly cited origin is a 1945 U.S. nutrition recommendation stating that adults need roughly 2.5 liters of water per day, followed by a sentence noting that most of this amount is already contained in food. The second half fell off somewhere along the way, and the number kept traveling on its own.
Current guidelines in most countries talk about "total water" rather than drinking water. Total water includes what you drink, what is in beverages like coffee and tea, and the moisture in food. Frequently cited ranges for adults are about 2.5 to 3.7 liters per day for men and 2.0 to 2.7 liters for women, with 20 to 30 percent of that coming from food. A bowl of rice, a bowl of soup, an apple, a salad: these all carry a surprising amount of water. Cucumber is about 96 percent water, watermelon about 92, cooked rice around 70.
So if you count only what you actually drink, most adults land somewhere between 1.2 and 2 liters, with a wide spread depending on body size, activity, and temperature. Two liters is not wrong. It just is not everyone's number.
Your body already has two gauges
For a healthy adult, the two most reliable indicators are thirst and urine color.
Thirst has been dismissed for years with the line "by the time you're thirsty it's too late." For healthy people that is mostly untrue. Thirst kicks in at about a 1 to 2 percent drop in body water, and a glass or two corrects that promptly. The exceptions are older adults, whose thirst response blunts with age, very young children, and anyone doing hard exercise in heat. If you are over 65 or caring for someone who is, drinking on a schedule rather than waiting for thirst is the safer approach.
Urine color is even more direct. Pale yellow to straw color means you are fine. Dark yellow means drink something. Amber or brownish means you are meaningfully behind, or something else is going on. Nearly clear means you are drinking more than you need. Skip the first urine of the morning, which is always concentrated, and judge by midday. One caveat: B-vitamin supplements turn urine bright fluorescent yellow, which has nothing to do with hydration.

Other common signs of running low: an afternoon headache with no obvious cause, chapped lips, a fuzzy inability to concentrate. These overlap completely with sleep deprivation, caffeine withdrawal, and hunger, so the sensible move is to drink a glass and see if it helps before drawing conclusions.
Does coffee count?
The old claim was that coffee is a diuretic, so you lose as much as you drink. For habitual intake in the range of three to four cups a day, the diuretic effect is small and most of the water in a cup of coffee stays in your body. Regular drinkers also build tolerance to the effect. Coffee, tea, milk, soup broth: all of it goes into the total-water column.
Alcohol is different. It suppresses antidiuretic hormone, so you produce more urine than the volume you drank. A 500 ml beer leaves you with less net water than 500 ml of plain water would. Alternating one glass of water with each alcoholic drink changes the next morning noticeably.
Soda and juice are technically fluid but carry a lot of sugar, which makes them a poor primary source. Unsweetened sparkling water is just water with bubbles.
What changes with the seasons
In summer, sweat losses climb fast. An hour of walking outdoors on a hot afternoon can cost 500 ml to a liter. Sip frequently before thirst sets in, and if you have been sweating for more than an hour, take in some sodium along with the water. That does not require a sports drink. A pinch of salt in a bottle, a salty snack, or a cup of broth works. Drinking two or three liters of plain water after heavy sweating can actually push blood sodium down and produce headache and nausea, the opposite of what you were trying to fix.
In winter, thirst goes quiet. Cold blunts the thirst signal while losses through breathing and skin continue, and indoor heating can drop humidity to 20 to 30 percent. That is why chapped lips and morning headaches are more common in January than July. A thermos of warm water or barley tea gets reached for far more often than a cold bottle. A humidifier or a damp towel hung near the radiator helps indirectly.
During cold and flu season, fever raises losses. A rough rule: each degree Celsius of fever increases fluid needs by about 10 percent. With vomiting or diarrhea, replace electrolytes along with water, and see a doctor if it lasts more than a day.
Exercise and knowing your own sweat rate
For light exercise under an hour, a glass before and drinking to thirst after is enough. For sessions over an hour, or anything in the heat, take 150 to 250 ml every 20 minutes and replace sodium afterward.
If you want to know your actual sweat rate, measure it once. Weigh yourself nude before and after a workout, and add what you drank during. Start at 70.0 kg, finish at 69.2 kg, drank 500 ml in between: you sweated out 1.3 kg, roughly 1.3 liters. Once you know that number for a typical session, you can adjust by feel from then on.
If post-workout weight is more than 2 percent below your starting weight, drink more during the next session. If it is higher than when you started, you overdid it.
Myths that keep circulating
- "More water means better skin." Dehydration does dry out skin, but once you are adequately hydrated, extra water does not improve it. The surplus leaves as urine.
- "Water makes you lose weight." A glass before meals modestly reduces how much people eat in some studies. Water itself burns nothing.
- "Drinking with meals hurts digestion." Weak evidence. Stomach acid is not neutralized by a glass of water. Drinking close to a liter with one meal, soup included, can leave you bloated, but that is a comfort issue, not a digestion one.
- "Cold water is bad for you." Temperature is not the problem. Cold water is simply harder to drink in quantity and less appealing in winter. The right temperature is whichever one you will actually drink.
- "More is always better." No. Healthy kidneys clear roughly 0.8 to 1 liter per hour. Drinking well beyond that in a short window can cause hyponatremia, low blood sodium, which has hospitalized marathon finishers and participants in water-drinking contests. If you are not thirsty, forcing it is rarely useful.
- "The eight glasses must be plain water, not coffee." Total water is the standard, and coffee and tea are part of it.
Drinking enough without keeping score
The two-liter bottle failed because it set a target volume. What replaced it is a set of moments rather than a quota.
- One glass on waking (200 to 250 ml). You lose 300 to 500 ml overnight through breathing and skin, and morning water goes down easily.
- One glass with each meal. Half a glass if there is soup.
- A glass of water alongside every coffee. Just finishing the water the cafe puts on the table adds two or three glasses a day.
- One 500 ml bottle when leaving the house. Empty is good; not empty is fine.
- Half a glass before bed, only if thirsty. Waking at 2 a.m. costs more in sleep than the water gains.
That routine lands at about 1.5 liters without any counting. For carrying, a 350 to 750 ml bottle is the practical size, and $10 to $30 buys a good insulated one that holds warm water in winter and cold in summer, so one bottle covers the year.
The two-liter bottle came out of the drawer eventually. It waters the plants now; the measurement marks turn out to be useful for that. On my desk there is a 500 ml thermos that I refill around 3 p.m., and it is usually empty by the time I leave.
